“You are a spirit, Tim.  A spirit is not composed of ‘matter’ and ‘energy’ and, in this case, ‘space’—it’s only the material universe that contains those components.  You ARE NOT a product of this universe, this universe is a product of you—actually mostly me.  You are independent of it, you are senior to it.  You are as big as you decide you are.  You are located wherever you decide you are located.  You move as fast as you consider yourself to move.  Your location is where you decide it is.  How many times must I explain this?

“What I just did Tim is the most natural thing a spirit does!  What you’re thinking right now—which is ‘that is impossible’— is the most un-natural thing a spirit does!!!”

She smiles weakly.  “I know.  It doesn’t help much to have it explained.   It doesn’t make you any freer.”

“I would like to have that ability!”

Espree looks at me expressionlessly.  “You do.”

There is nothing more arrogant and ignorant, than a civilization of souls that think they're just brains.

As an immortal soul you should know exactly how and when you were created, where you have been and where you are going.

"The moved them a few hundred deci-terms to a planet with a better environment.  Then they brought in the humanoids."

"And there went the neighborhood!" said Salso. "Big mistake.  So they're moving them out."

TOTAL AMNESIA EXCERPT:WHY DO ANIMALS SEEM LIKE LESSER CREATURES?

“Is the same true for animals Espree? Is each animal is a Spirit Trapped in a body?”

            “Not all of them.  You see a body does not need a spirit inhabiting it in order for it to function.  A beetle, for instance, is just a biological unit and operates like a robot―the only difference being that the creators of the gene pattern paid a fee to allow them to use the patented ‘replication’ process.  A horse on the other hand is usually animated by a spirit, but unfortunately the spirit is immersed in a massive body with a simplistic brain.  It would be like loading software on a 20 year old computer.  The simple brain of a horse would be the hardware, the mind, the software.  Some of the computations will run very effectively on a horse, but only a few simple programs―such as their ability to make their body run, acquire food and to mate.   Most advance programs will not even run, and for those that do, it is like watching the ‘hourglass’ on your computer screen tumble over and over.  Try to talk to a horse and their ability to grasp the concept of language is so slow that they never catch on―their hardware/software package runs the program so sluggishly that the horse would literally die of old age before the hourglass stopped tumbling and he began to comprehend.  The spirit inhabiting the body is so restricted in its perceptions by the brain that it gives the appearance of being rather dull, when, in actuality, it is simply suppressed by the inability of its Mechanical Mind to compute.”

            She smiles.  “But if you can get through to a horse with spiritual communication – such as the ‘telepathy’ you sense between us―they are no different than you or I.  I love communicating with animals―they don’t have as many computations running as humans and so the communication is much more pure.

            “OK Professor Doolittle.”

“It does not mean the spirit attached to―say a dog―is any less capable and aware than you or I; they are just unlucky.  They were designated a dog body with very slow hardware.  But Tim, this isn’t really a brain problem.  This is way, way down the line. The actual problem is that a spirit has been totally suppress and overwhelmed.  It has been essentially brainwashed to consider that it needs a body to be alive and a brain to think―and in this state, it WILL use the brain and the Mechanical Mind in order to think.  Its thinking is based upon data that has been programmed into its brain via its mind.  It thinks like a computer “thinks” in a preprogrammed response on programmed data.  It observes through the filter of the mind and only uses that data to reason with.  It would be the same as being hooked up to a computer game.  You only see what the program sees, you only do what the software and hardware allows you to do, don’t you see?”

So you’re saying I’m perceiving only what my mind is allowing me to perceive, right now as we speak?”

Espree hesitates.  I can tell she wants to say “yes”, but instead she says “Let’s take it a step at a time.”

The Invasion of Earth

I feel so matter-of-fact.  OK, life here on Earth is going to change.  We’re all going to die, or maybe we’ll be taken over by some alien race.   

Yep, that’s pretty interesting. 

Any way you look at it my 15 years of education has suddenly become relatively insignificant.  The last three years of college―with all of its supreme importance―means nothing now.  Material possessions, mortgages, mutual funds, insurance policies, business plans, social security, the national debt―even governments and entire cultures―all of that is going to become basically meaningless in the scheme of things; wiped out, just like that.  Now everything that made up my life, everything that is so important to achieve; the goals, the aspirations; they all seem like some silly, almost childlike game in what has become the current scheme of things.  Now that’s an interesting “theory of relativity.”

Apparently we’re just some Podunk Planet with Podunk technology and they have their own version of Manifest Destiny.  It ain’t so noble when it’s your society that’s being “civilized” is it white man.

What Is Total Amnesia?

“Memories?”  I’m confused.  “What are you saying?  You’re saying I have lived before.”

Espree is staring at me with a shocked expression on her face.

“Apparently we have neglected a very important point here Tim.  It appears that the times I have describe you in terms of millions of years flew right over your head. 

“When I say you have become trapped in this universe, I did not mean it just happened!  This has been going on for billions of years!  Most people you see have been around millions probably billions of years!  Do you realize how many lifetimes that is?  Can you imagine how many memories you have?”

I am shocked.  Of all the unbelievable things Espree has told me, this is the thing I simply can’t accept.  It’s so…it’s so personal.  Sure, you can tell me the Universe is a trap or the planet is being harvested or even that I was once a free spirit who has become trapped.  It’s all nice philosophic, abstract ideas that I can use when I’m in some contemplative mood or sitting around smoking weed with my friends.  Now she is telling me I may be millions of years old and that I actually have memories of the whole experience.  Well, I don’t.  And If I did I would most certainly know it wouldn’t I?  I would certainly have some kind of recollection if it were true right?   

“Espree, I really don’t buy that re-incarnation stuff.  It’s totally unscientific and, as far as I’m concerned, bunk for weirdo’s.  I don’t have any memories of other lifetimes―is that what you’re saying I should have?  Well I don’t, and anyway, even if I did live before how could I remember anything if I no longer have the brain that contains the memories?”

Espree is staring at me with a look of shock.  “You honestly can’t recall anything can you?”

“Well, no I don’t recall any past life memories and if I did live before why wouldn’t I remember?

“Hmm, total amnesia,” says Espree to herself, “amazing”.
